Announcement
First Christian Church has received a $750,000 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its Capital Project Initiative for Residential Youth Camps. This is one of 69 implementation grants being awarded through phase 2 of the initiative, which aims to help Indiana residential youth camps improve the overall camp experience and outcomes for youth through new, enhanced and expanded facilities integral to quality youth camp programming.
With the grant, First Christian Church will be making sweeping upgrades and improvements to the Bedford Camp and Conference Center, including constructing new cabins, installing a new walking trail and front gate, purchasing new groundskeeping equipment, and renovating the Overlook Lodge and existing cabins. These improvements will continue the more than a century old tradition of children attending camp on this blessed property and will help First Christian Church fulfill its mission of reaching outward to connect people with God’s abundance.
“More than ever, youth need to be able to experience a break from the fast-moving, overly complicated aspects of modern society, break away from the distraction, pressure, and noise, and make spiritual connections that are only possible in nature, at a location such as camp. This grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. will be a tremendous help in allowing us to continue providing youth with an opportunity to make these, oftentimes, life-altering connections with God, nature, friends, and themselves. This is incredible!” Chuck Bair- Manager Bedford Camp and Conference Center
Bedford Camp and Conference Center began as a YMCA camp in 1924 and has continually been hosting youth camps ever since. Each year, Bedford Camp and Conference Center hosts groups of all ages and religious affiliations with participants coming from all over the world, but primarily focuses on hosting youth camps from Christian churches throughout Indiana and northern Kentucky.
About Lilly Endowment
Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly, Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. Although the gifts of stock remain a financial bedrock of the Endowment, it is a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff and location. In keeping with the founders’ wishes, the Endowment supports the causes of community development, education and religion. The Endowment funds programs throughout the United States, especially in the field of religion, and maintains a special commitment to its founders’ hometown, Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana.

About BFCCBedford First Christian Church is a place where different view points about God, faith and current issues are welcome. This openness is sometimes challenging, but our faith deepens when we listen to one another's stories. We give thanks for our long and rich history as a historic downtown congregation.
